Where it is, and how to get there
Ararat rises out of a high plain in Türkiye's far east, roughly 1,700 km from Istanbul. Most visitors fly to Ağrı or Iğdır and drive to Doğubayazıt, the small town at its foot. From there the mountain dominates the horizon — on a clear morning you see the full snow cap without moving from the road.
This is a genuinely remote region with a short comfortable season. Plan for July to September; winters are severe and roads through the passes can close.
Climbing: what is actually involved
- A permit is mandatory. It is issued by the Turkish authorities and applied for on your behalf by a licensed agency, usually 4–8 weeks in advance, with passport details.
- You must climb with an authorised Turkish guide. Independent ascents are not permitted because of the border-zone location.
- The standard southern route takes 4–5 days: Doğubayazıt to Camp 1 (about 3,200 m), Camp 2 (about 4,200 m), a night start for the summit, then descent.
- It is a non-technical but serious high-altitude climb — crampons and an ice axe are needed near the summit glacier, and altitude, not difficulty, is what turns most people back.

The Noah's Ark question, honestly
Ararat is identified in the Book of Genesis as the resting place of Noah's Ark, and that association drives a steady stream of expeditions. No scientifically verified evidence of the ark has ever been found on the mountain, and the well-known boat-shaped formation near Üzengili is a natural geological feature that geologists have studied and explained.
