Van & Lake Van 2026: Akdamar, Castle, Breakfast

Van sits at 1,700 m on the eastern shore of Türkiye's largest lake, a soda lake seven times the size of Lake Geneva, ringed by volcanoes. This is the old heartland of Urartu, later of Armenian Vaspurakan, and the landscape reflects all of it: a 3,000-year-old citadel above the plain, a tenth-century church on an island, and highland villages under snow for five months of the year. Very few Western visitors come, which is precisely the argument for coming. Akdamar Island and the Church of the Holy Cross The Armenian cathedral of Aght'amar was built between 915 and 921 for King Gagik I of Vaspurakan, and its exterior is covered in high-relief stone carving — David and Goliath, Jonah and the whale, Adam and Eve, a vine frieze full of animals — that is unlike anything else in Anatolia. It was restored and reopened as a museum in 2007, and an annual liturgy is held there. Boats leave from the Gevaş pier, about 45 km south-west of Van, and take twenty minutes. In summer they depart as they fill; outside the season you may need to charter the boat, which is worth arranging in advance. Give the island two hours — the almond trees and the lake light are half the visit.
