Taksim Square & İstiklal Street 2026 Guide

Taksim Square is modern Istanbul's civic centre, and İstiklal Street is the 1.4 km pedestrian avenue that runs downhill from it to Galata. Between them they carry roughly three million people on a busy weekend. Most visitors walk the street once, decide it is a crowded shopping strip, and leave. That judgement is fair if you stay on the main avenue — and completely wrong if you step into the side passages, which is where the district's 19th-century Levantine city still lives. Quick answer: is Taksim worth your time? Yes, but as an evening, not a morning. Sultanahmet gives you the monuments; Taksim and İstiklal give you the living city — meyhane dinners, live music, bookshops, church courtyards and the 1875 Tünel funicular. Give it three to four hours from late afternoon into the evening. If you only have two days in Istanbul, spend day one in Sultanahmet and the second half of day two here.
