Göbekli Tepe is an open, ticketed state archaeological site 18 km from Şanlıurfa, with a visitor centre, a short shuttle to the excavation, and raised walkways around the enclosures under a protective shelter. Karahantepe, 55 km away, has been open since 2023. Allow 90 minutes to two hours at each. At Gobekli Tepe, I find the excavation area covered by a special membrane roof, but the surrounding walkways are completely exposed.
