Assos & Behramkale 2026: Temple of Athena Guide

Assos sits on a 238-metre andesite cliff above the Aegean opposite the Greek island of Lesbos. The 6th-century-BC Doric Temple of Athena on the summit, the Ottoman stone village of Behramkale spilling down its eastern slope, and the original Greek harbour at the cliff's base together form one of the most concentrated layers of history anywhere on the Türkiye coast. Aristotle lived here from 348 to 345 BC. St Paul walked through in AD 56. In 2026 fewer than 60,000 international visitors make it here per year — about a third of the daily flow into Ephesus. Why Assos is the literary pilgrimage of the Aegean Aristotle founded a philosophical school at Assos in 348 BC under the patronage of Hermias, the city's tyrant, and married Hermias's adopted daughter Pythias here. St Paul walked the 50 km from Alexandria Troas to Assos in AD 56 (Acts 20:13–14) and sailed from the harbour to Mytilene. The Temple of Athena (530 BC) is the only Doric temple on the entire Anatolian coast — every other Greek temple in western Türkiye is Ionic. For travellers tracing Greek philosophy, Pauline geography or pre-classical architecture, Assos is unmissable.
